Features of hay twine, pros and cons
- 20.02.2023
Hay twine is made from polypropylene thread. Its peculiarity is that it is a synthetic material with special properties. He is flexible and durable, does not deteriorate from dampness, temperature fluctuations. Polymeric fibers for hay twine are made so that they are tear-resistant and do not stretch. The threads are tightly woven, making them even stronger. Thanks to this polypropylene rope holds the hay tightly packed in a bale, does not let it unravel and increase in volume.
Features of hay twine
Hay Twine does not crack and does not crush in the bends during transportation or prolonged storage. It is malleable, so it is easy to knot, even at high rope tension. No fungus forms on the yarn material.
Many types of synthetic fibers deteriorate from exposure to ultraviolet light. Hay Twine is designed so that it does not deteriorate from sun exposure. Therefore, it does not lose its original properties and appearance, even if the bales are placed in the light. The material does not emit any harmful substances and there is no chemical odor in the storage areas of products that are tied with it.
Polypropylene ropes vary in density and diameter. The higher the density, the thicker the twine. For tying hay into bales, twine with a density of 2200 TEX is used.
Hay twine is suitable not only for packing hay, straw, grass. It is used to tie up tomatoes, create rails for cucumbers and grapes. Polypropylene rope can be stretched hard, and it will not sag under the weight of fruits.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Hay twine is the most affordable of all materials for packing hay bales.
- Polypropylene yarn is easy to use. Any agricultural worker can quickly learn the technique of tying hay with twine.
- The strong material of hay twine holds firmly to the cylindrical shape of the bale.
- The thread is strong. It is difficult for dogs, cats or mice to chew or tear it.
- No special equipment is required to work with bailing twine.
Cons:
- Packing hay with twine is slower than if you use other methods.
- Bales with hay tied with twine are stored on a level surface. There should be no pits, large stones. After a rain, water accumulates in such places, and the hay bale on top of it does not allow the liquid to evaporate. The hay spoils from dampness. If the bale is placed on a flat surface, no water gets under it and the straw does not spoil.
- It is better to store hay tied with twine in a ventilated room or under a roof rather than outside in the open air. The bale of hay is not insulated from ultraviolet light and precipitation. The twine does not cover the straw, but only binds it together to help keep it in shape.
Despite the disadvantages, twine helps to save the budget of the company, because its cost is low. There is no need to buy special equipment for wrapping hay bales. If it is necessary to speed up the process of forming bales, hay twine is used in automatic wrapping of straw.
