A psychologist is a specialist who studies the human psyche and behavior. They help people understand and resolve their emotional and psychological problems. Psychologists are not required to have medical training and cannot prescribe medication for the treatment of mental disorders.
Types of psychology
A clinical psychologist diagnoses and helps to cope with depression, anxiety disorders, mild forms of schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. They use psychodiagnostic tests and conduct individual and group therapy sessions. Clinical psychologists work closely with psychiatrists.
Other types of psychological specializations:
- Psychotherapists help clients overcome personal problems, improve their emotional state, and develop self-help skills. They use various therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, Gestalt therapy, and others.
- A counseling psychologist helps clients cope with everyday life problems such as stress, interpersonal conflicts, career issues, self-esteem, and personal development. They use counseling in the form of conversation, cognitive and behavioral techniques, and personal development training.
- A family psychologist helps spouses improve their relationship.
- A child and adolescent psychologist studies children's behavior and helps solve problems related to school, social adaptation, and emotional state. Their methods include play therapy, art therapy, family therapy, and developmental diagnostics.
- A neuropsychologist studies the relationship between brain activity and behavior, conducts diagnostics and rehabilitation for neurological disorders. He works with patients who have brain damage, such as head injuries, strokes, and dementia.
There are very specialized types of psychology. A cognitive psychologist studies the processes of perception, memory, and thinking and helps improve cognitive functions. A geriatric psychologist studies the psychological aspects of aging and helps older people and their families cope with age-related changes.
How a psychologist works
Sessions with a psychologist may vary depending on the method of therapy. The specialist takes the client's needs into account. However, there are several common stages that can be identified in the process of psychotherapy sessions:
- An initial consultation is necessary to get to know the client, establish a trusting relationship, and identify the main problems and goals of therapy. The psychologist uses questionnaires, tests, interviews, and observations.
- The specialist works with the client to set specific and achievable goals for therapy.
- The psychologist develops a treatment plan with specific methods and techniques that will be used in therapy: cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, Gestalt therapy, etc. They choose the most appropriate methods together with the client.
- Therapy sessions help change negative thoughts and behaviors, develop self-help skills, and improve emotional well-being. The psychologist may give homework assignments to reinforce the skills learned in the session.
- The specialist evaluates the results of therapy and makes changes if necessary.
Sessions with a psychologist usually last 45-60 minutes and take place with a certain regularity. The number of sessions depends on the complexity of the problem and the goals of therapy. Psychotherapy can take place over several meetings or over a long period of time.
