Why constipation occurs: what it is and how to prevent it

Constipation is a bowel problem in which a person cannot go to the toilet normally. Bowel movements are infrequent. Stools become hard, and the process of defecation becomes difficult and unpleasant. This can happen to anyone, but if constipation occurs frequently, it is worth paying attention to your health and lifestyle.
Why does constipation occur?
Constipation can be caused by various factors, from diet and lifestyle to health problems. Sometimes it is temporary, for example, after a long trip or a change in diet. But if you don't have regular bowel movements, the cause may be more serious.
The main causes of constipation are:
- Lack of fiber in the diet. If your diet is low in vegetables, fruits, and grains, peristalsis, or the movement of the intestinal walls, slows down. Fiber stimulates its activity and softens the stool. The stool passes through the intestines faster.
- Lack of water. When the body does not receive the necessary amount of fluid, the stool becomes hard and dry. It gets stuck and moves slowly.
- Sedentary lifestyle. Physical activity stimulates the intestines, and with a lack of movement, the contraction of the intestinal walls slows down.
- Frequent holding back. If you don't go to the toilet when you first feel the urge, over time the intestines stop responding to the body's signals, leading to constipation.
- Stress and nervous tension. Strong emotions affect the functioning of all organs, including the digestive system. Constant tension can slow down the intestines. There is such a thing as “traveler's constipation” when a person experiences stress from a change in environment.
- Taking certain medications. Painkillers, antidepressants, iron supplements, and even some antihistamines can cause constipation.
- Hormonal changes. Pregnant women and people with thyroid disorders may experience bowel dysfunction.
If constipation occurs infrequently, it is enough to adjust your diet and drink more water. But if the problem recurs constantly, it may be a sign of serious disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, or other diseases. In such cases, it is best to consult a doctor.
How to prevent constipation?
It is easier to prevent constipation than to suffer from discomfort and look for ways to solve it. The body works better when it is provided with the right conditions. Useful habits for preventing constipation:
- Add more fiber to your diet. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and legumes help the intestines function properly.
- Drink enough water. You need to drink at least 1.5-2 liters of fluid a day, especially if your diet is high in fiber. It only works if you drink enough water. Otherwise, fiber can make constipation worse.
- Get more exercise. Even a simple walk after a meal stimulates intestinal peristalsis. Abdominal exercises and yoga are also beneficial.
- Go to the toilet at the first urge, without holding back, otherwise your intestines will get used to delaying bowel movements.
- Try to be less nervous. Good sleep, meditation, and relaxing walks help reduce stress levels, which can cause constipation.
- Develop a routine. If you go to the toilet at the same time every day, your body will get used to regularity, and it will be easier to pass stool.
Constipation is not just an inconvenience, but a signal from the body that something is wrong. When the intestines work regularly, a person feels better, has more energy, and is in a good mood.
